Wahaca

The brainchild of 2005 Masterchef winner Thomasina Myers, Wahaca is not your average greasy Mexican joint. The menu is based around the theme of Mexican market eating – the idea being that rather than choose starters and mains, you fill your table with a selection of nibbley tapas-ish items including the usual suspects – enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos – with fillings made from market fresh produce and even English grown chillies. The decor's simple, with some sugar skulls dotted about for local flavour - hence the beauty above (that and the fact that sugar skulls are AWESOME and definitely my tattoo crush of the week).

While not the spiciest Mexican I’ve ever had, the fresh ingredients kept things interesting and the fresh salsa added plenty of flavour. I don’t know what the Spanish for ‘nom’ is, but it certainly applies here. (Nombre, possibly?)

Best bit: Churros for dessert – 3 scalding hot fresh cinnamon dusted doughnuts served with chocolate sauce for dipping.

Worst bit: The ‘cacao’ cocktail – a combination of chocolate and tequila, served in a glass half filled with powdered cinnamon/nutmeg/whatever it was. Seven shades of wrong.
